Microneedling: The Treatment That Works Beneath the Surface

Your skincare routine matters. But there are some things even the best serum or moisturizer simply can't do on its own.
Concerns such as fine lines, acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and changes in skin firmness involve more than what we see at the surface. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, and factors such as sun exposure, inflammation, and acne can further affect the skin's structure and appearance. That's where microneedling is different.
Rather than simply improving how the surface of the skin looks temporarily, microneedling stimulates the skin's natural repair process and encourages collagen remodeling from within.
It's one of the reasons this treatment has become such a popular option for people who want smoother, firmer, healthier-looking skin without surgery or extensive downtime.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive aesthetic treatment designed to stimulate the skin's natural healing response. During treatment, a specialized device containing tiny, sterile needles creates controlled microchannels in the skin.
These micro-injuries trigger a natural repair response that includes the production and remodeling of collagen and elastin—two proteins that play important roles in the skin's structure, firmness, and elasticity.
As this process continues in the weeks and months following treatment, the skin can gradually appear smoother, firmer, and more even in texture.
In other words, the treatment itself may take less than an hour. The real work happens afterward.
What Can Microneedling Treat?
One of the advantages of microneedling is its versatility.
Depending on your skin type, treatment goals, and medical history, microneedling may help improve the appearance of:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Certain types of acne scars
Enlarged pores
Uneven or rough skin texture
Mild skin laxity
Sun-damaged skin
Certain areas of uneven pigmentation
Stretch marks
Overall skin tone and radiance
Microneedling also temporarily creates microchannels within the skin, which may enhance the penetration of certain products specifically selected for use during or immediately following treatment.
However, more absorption isn't always better. Only products considered appropriate for use with microneedling should be applied during this period, which is another reason professional treatment and aftercare matter.
Why Collagen Matters
Collagen is one of the primary structural proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, supported, and resilient.
When we're younger, the skin naturally produces and remodels collagen efficiently. Over time, that process slows, while sun exposure and other environmental factors can contribute to collagen breakdown.
The result?
Skin may gradually become thinner, less firm, or more textured, while fine lines and other signs of aging become increasingly noticeable.
Microneedling essentially gives the skin a controlled reason to initiate its repair process.
Rather than simply covering or temporarily plumping a concern, the goal is to encourage the skin to rebuild and remodel its underlying support structure over time.
That also means results aren't instantaneous.
And that's actually part of the point.
What to Expect During a Microneedling Treatment
At NSI Wellness | Aesthetics, we believe understanding your treatment is just as important as receiving it.
Before your procedure, we'll evaluate your skin, discuss your concerns and goals, review relevant medical history and contraindications, and explain what you can realistically expect before, during, and after treatment.
One of the biggest misconceptions about microneedling is that it must be extremely painful because needles are involved.
For most patients, the experience is much more manageable than expected.
Before Treatment
A topical numbing cream is typically applied before the procedure to improve comfort.
Once the skin is adequately numbed, your provider will cleanse and prepare the treatment area.
During Treatment
The microneedling device is passed systematically across the treatment area. Needle depth and treatment settings may be adjusted based on the area being treated, your skin, and your individual goals.
Patients often describe the sensation as:
Light vibration
Mild scratching
Pressure
A prickling or tickling sensation
Certain areas of the face may feel more sensitive than others, but topical numbing helps make the procedure comfortable for most people.
Microneedling Downtime: What Does Recovery Look Like?
One reason microneedling is so popular is its relatively limited downtime compared with more aggressive resurfacing procedures.
Immediately after treatment, your skin may look pink or red—similar to a mild to moderate sunburn.
You may also experience:
Warmth
Tightness
Mild swelling
Tenderness or sensitivity
Dryness
Mild itching
These effects are expected parts of the healing response and typically improve over the following few days, although recovery varies depending on treatment depth, skin sensitivity, and individual healing.
Around days two and three, some patients notice increased dryness, roughness, or light flaking.
Don't pick it. Don't scrub it. Let your skin heal.
During this time, the skin barrier is recovering and should be treated gently.
Microneedling Aftercare: Protect the Progress
What you do after microneedling matters.
Your skin is temporarily more sensitive following treatment, so this isn't the time to experiment with new products or immediately return to an aggressive skincare routine.
Your provider will give you individualized aftercare instructions, but recommendations may include:
Keep the skin clean and appropriately hydrated.
Use only provider-approved post-treatment skincare.
Avoid picking, peeling, or manually exfoliating the skin.
Avoid harsh acids, scrubs, retinoids, and other irritating active ingredients until cleared to resume them.
Avoid excessive heat, sweating, or other activities your provider recommends limiting during early healing.
Minimize direct sun exposure.
Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as directed.
Reapply sunscreen when appropriate.
Following your aftercare instructions helps support proper healing while reducing unnecessary irritation and complications.
